New Era History
The story of this company started in 1920 when a German immigrant Ehrhardt Koch and a skilled craftsman decided to redesign the fashion headwear. In order to open the company, Ehrhardt borrowed money from his sister Rose and so he founded the New Era Cap Co. Since he was opened to new ideas, during the first year, the company managed to produce 60 000 Gatsby-style caps.
In 1932, his son Harold decided to join the business. He noticed that the demand for fashion caps was slowly fading, and professional baseball was flourishing. This was the moment when New Era decided to create a new item, the baseball cap. The first New Era professional baseball cap was produced in 1934 for the Cleveland Indians’ uniforms.
By 1950, this company was the only independent cap maker supplying caps to famous basketball teams like Brooklyn Dodgers®, Cleveland Indians®, Cincinnati Reds®, and Detroit Tigers®. In 1954, Harold designed the New Era’s fitted 59FIFTY contemporary style cap.
Over the years, the company has evolved a lot, even Harold’s son joined the company and was named president. In the ‘80s, the company was producing headwear for college sports, AAA and international baseball leagues and even started selling its caps to sports fans. The company’s globalization efforts continued with opening new offices in Australia, Japan and Europe. In 2012, New Era became the official on-court cap of the NBA, making it the only brand in the history of the sport to have exclusive on-court, on-field, and sideline headwear rights for all 3 major US leagues at the same time.
